What Northwest Ohio Soil Means For Trees and Shrubs

Did your trees and shrubs not quite look their best last year? Did you have yellow leaves (chlorosis) or even plants that lost their leaves? This is a common problem with Northwest Ohio soils. We are often wet in climate, and there is a LOT of limestone in the area. Limestone = ALKALINE soil. Unfortunately, many ornamental plants love ACIDIC soil.

What this means is when something like an azalea is planted in our Northwest Ohio soils, it can really struggle to grow and often looks stunted and off-color. Fortunately, we have options to remedy this problem! If it’s a large tree, we can inject the nutrients needed directly into the trunk for a quick recovery. We then soil inject a fertilizer specifically for acidic-loving plants. This fertilizer is high in nutrients like Iron and Manganese that plants in our area are often lacking.

This first course of treatment will fix your plants up for this season, but we still need a longer-term solution. This proactive approach is why we also add sulfur to attack the root of the problem, as it is the only nutrient that can actually change your soil to be more acidic. Often, after a few years of the right treatments, your plants will look great with minimal fertilization! Call us today to get your trees and shrubs off to a great start this year!
